It was an up and down Saturday for the Charlotte 49ers women’s soccer and volleyball teams. While WSoc disposed of George Washington to move to 3-0 in the A-10, volleyball wasn’t so fortunate, losing to newcomer VCU in straight sets (that makes Charlotte 0-2 on the weekend against the Rams following MSoc’s loss). Here’s a quick look at the results.
Women’s Soccer: Niners 4, GW 2
Charlotte won its fifth straight overall and opened their A-10 slate 3-0 as they kicked off a five-game road trip in our nation’s capital. Lena Suarez got it going in the 12th minute, followed by a Jennifer Lee tally (the first of her career) nearly 20 minutes in (assisted by Carrie Dail). Alex Myers headed home a Amanda Jones pass in the 37th minute to make it 3-0. Jones added the Niners’ fourth and final goal in the game’s 75th minute for her sixth of the year. Samie Cloutier and Adriana Moya had the tallies for GW, who fall to 0-3 in conference play. Next up for the Green and White–Fordham on Friday night up in the Bronx…
Volleyball: VCU 3, Niners 0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-17)
It wasn’t good news for the volleyball team in their A-10 home debut as they drop to 0-5 in league matches this year. The first two sets were decided by six combined points, but in the end, it was the Rams coming up with the late plays en route to the sweep and a 3-2 start to their A-10 tenure (and 16-3 overall–give them credit; they are a very good team). Leading the way in kills for Charlotte was Amanda Videmsek (14–led all players); Bianca Rouse added 11 to move to a tie for 9th overall in program history with 1,172. Lily Vera added 36 assists for the Niners, who take on the other A-10 newcomer, Butler, in the annual Dig Pink match Thursday at 7.
