Niner NotePAD: Fall is in the air

The temperatures have dropped significantly here at Pick Axe Digest HQ in Charlotte, North Carolina–and with fall break coming to a close for students, activity will start to pick up once more around the UNCC campus.  This weekend will have plenty of action to choose from, as Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer and volleyball is at home.  Here’s this week’s Niner NotePAD:

Women’s basketball continues to practice leading up to the first game, an exhibition against cross-town rival Johnson C. Smith on November 3.  We’ll be sure to see men’s basketball begin their practice schedule as well, fresh off of being picked to finish 12th out of 16 teams in the A-10.  Quick reminder–Thursday marks one week until Basketball Madness, the unofficial start of the 2012-13 basketball season…
–Transamerica Field has been quiet of late, but on Friday and Sunday, the noise level will be at a high volume once again with men’s soccer in town.  Fordham (Fri.) and La Salle (Sun.) pay a visit this weekend, and Queen City Army will sure to be in full attendance.  MSoc had a little bit of a shaky last couple of days–dropping a 4-1 decision to VCU before strangling Richmond with a dominating 2-0 result–and the rankings now show them ranked 19th.  They’ll need to keep their play at a high level going into the heart of the conference schedule and a four-game homestand…
Women’s soccer is red hot, having won their last five (their latest victory being a 4-2 win at George Washington on October 6).  They’re in the midst of a five-game road trip, with trips to Fordham (Friday) and La Salle (Sunday) coming up this weekend.  The La Salle game may very will be for first place overall the conference (the Explorers are 4-0 while the Niners are 3-0), so we’ll have to see how things play out.  One thing’s for sure: this looks to be a completely different team than last year’s that went 4-4-1 in conference play…
Volleyball is still in search of its first A-10 win (0-5).  They’re set to play the second and third games of a five-game home stretch that sees conference newcomer Butler (Thursday) and Saint Louis (Sunday) come into Halton Arena.  Although they played VCU close, the Niners weren’t able to get over the hump as the Rams ended up with the 3-0 sweep on Saturday night.  By the way, Thursday marks the annual Dig Pink breast cancer awareness match, and last year Charlotte led the nation in fundraising for the event…
Cross country is back after a lengthy break as they head to the Chili Pepper Cross Country Festival in Arkansas on Saturday.  Following that is the program’s final A-10 Championship appearance in Philadelphia on October 27…
Golf is at the Rod Meyers Invitational in Durham on Saturday and Sunday.  The guys are coming off a strong showing at the Rees Jones Invitational last week, where they placed 4th out of 12…
–Lastly, women’s tennis hosts the Charlotte 49er Invitational Saturday and Sunday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex…
