Jennings Rex scored two goals for the 49ers.

Charlotte 49ers 3, La Salle 0: Inside The Numbers

On a hot, bright and sunny Sunday, the #16 Charlotte 49ers (8-2-3, 2-1-1) dominated the La Salle Explorers (8-3-2, 2-1-0) posting 3 goals to La Salle’s 0, to earn the shutout victory at Transamerica Field. This was the first regulation win for the Niners at home, all 90 minutes of it controlled by the boys in green. Here’s the recap:

In the 13th minute, Thomas Allen put a noggin’ on net from a Tyler Gibson free kick but was stopped by Explorer’s goaltender, John McCarthy. In the 19th minute, Giuseppe Gentile slipped through defenders but fired the rock wide. In the 39th minute, Biko Bradnock-Brennan led Dominic Bonilla, who beat defenders but was stopped by McCarthy as well.

The brick wall was finally knocked down with just 20 seconds left in the first half when a shot by Gibson hit off the crossbar then was deflected into the nylon by Jennings Rex. The Niners would not look back in the 2nd half.

Fresh into the 49th minute Gentile beat his defender down the right side of the field and executed a beautiful center that Rex tapped in for his second tally of the afternoon. Then, in the 67th minute, freshman Kyle Parker notched his first collegiate goal with a smooth, sliding kick that snuck underneath McCarthy’s dive.

Fruitful Facts:

-Charlotte out-shot The Explorers 24-2 and 13-1 in shots on goal

-This was Klay Davis and the defense’s 3rd shutout in a row, and Charlotte’s 6th of the season

– Jennings Rex had his 2nd two goal performance of the year, and the 4th of his career. He now leads the 49ers with 5 scores

-Rex led the way with 6 whacks, while Donnie Smith, Thomas Allen, and Tyler Gibson each had 3

-La Salle had 12 fouls to Charlotte’s 11, and The Explorers had the lone yellow card, awarded to #24, Shawn Mearig

-The Niners led corners 8-4

The 49ers look to continue to build confidence, and momentum headed into next weekend’s showdown at Transamerica with the UMass Minutemen at 7pm, Friday, and the Rhode Island Rams at 1pm, on Sunday.
