It’s time again for our Charlotte 49ers #PickAxePick, and this week it goes to #11 of the men’s soccer team, Giuseppe Gentile. Giussi scored the game winner in the 85th minute to give the Niners a 2-1 victory against George Washington yesterday on Senior Day, and clinched the Atlantic 10 regular season title.
Gentile has been putting together another fine season in his sophomore campaign. He has eight goals (tied with Jennings Rex for the team lead) and 21 points (tops on the team) so far. For his career, he has eighteen goals and 43 points, and that’s not even through the end of his second year. At the rate he’s going, next year he is guaranteed to jump into the top ten in goals scored at the end of his career (just nine goals away from a tie for tenth all time), and could conceviably jump into the top twenty in points in program history this year (just eight points shy of a tie for 20th).
The job’s not done as the Niners still have the Atlantic 10 tournament coming up–Thursday through Sunday at the friendly confines of Transamerica Field. Take care of business there and they may be looking at a first round bye as well as a home NCAA tournament game in a couple of weeks. We’ll be covering it here at the Digest, so keep checking back throughout the week.
Jenna Litoborski: Congratulations to the Charlotte 49ers volleyball senior, who went over 1,000 kills in her career in a loss to Xavier on Sunday afternoon.
Darion Clark: The freshman had a fine debut in the men’s basketball team’s exhibition win over Pfeiffer, recording a double-double (19 points, 12 rebounds).
