The Charlotte 49ers now know who their first round opponent will be in the first round of the Atlantic 10 men’s soccer tournament, set to begin Thursday at Transamerica Field. The Duquesne Dukes, the eighth seed in the tournament, will be taking on the top-seeded Niners in the final quarterfinal match of the day, which will be held at 8pm. La Salle’s win against the Dukes this afternoon gave them an identical record and point total (4-4-1, 13 points), but the Explorers gained the 7th seed on the head-to-head tiebreak. Butler, who needed some help to get in as well as a upset victory over Saint Louis, were eliminated from postseason play. (They ended up losing anyway to the Billikens, 4-0.)
Charlotte and Duquesne didn’t meet in the regular season this time around, but saw each other last year at Transamerica Field on October 16, 2011, a Niners win. Giuseppe Gentile scored the match’s only goal in the game’s 85th minute. All-time, the Niners are 4-1-1 against their conference rivals from Pittsburgh, and have outscored them 8-5.
There’s still a lot of work to be done in the rest of the league table (including a three-way tie between Xavier, VCU and Temple), but as far as the Niners are concerned, they know who they’ll be facing on Thursday evening.
