It’s been a few weeks since we’ve done one of these, but it’s time for another Charlotte 49ers Recruit Confidential. This time it’s related to football, and it zeros in to the newest offer for the Niners. His name is DeAndre Thompkins–he’s listed as an athlete in the class of 2014 at Swansboro (NC).
Thompkins can basically do it all. After a decent 2011, he’s become a revelation in 2012–rushing for 1,359 yards and ten touchdowns in his junior season (on just 175 carries). One of his best games was against Dixon on September 7, where he gashed the defense for 231 yards and three touchdowns on just 20 carries. But he topped that in a win against South Lenoir on October 12–19 carries, 236 yards and “only” two touchdowns. Thompkins has six 100+ yard rushing games to go along with his pair of 200+ yard performances.
But we’re not done. Thompkins is a beast on special teams. Consider the fact that this year, he has returned five kickoffs for touchdowns–four of those exceeding 80 yards, one of those being 96 yards. You read that right–in the entire season. And don’t be surprised to see him taking snaps under center, lining up as a receiver or lacing it up on the other end of the ball, either.
With numbers like that, Thompkins’ stock looks to be rising very fast. App State, North Carolina, Penn State and the Niners’ future C-USA foe, Old Dominion, have offered along with Charlotte. Georgia Tech, West Virginia and N.C. State also showing interest. Duke wants to stop by and see him, while Clemson is looking to bring him in eventually. But don’t be surprised to see those names grow more and more prominent as he embarks on his senior season in 2013.
