Road To Hoover: Waiting game for Charlotte 49ers men's soccer

We all know that the Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team is going to the NCAA tournament. The big question is who they’ll be playing and whether or not it will be at Transamerica Field. Wherever they’re starting, the Digest will be tracking them as they set out on a quest to make it back to (and win) the College Cup in Hoover, Alabama.

One of the determining factors that decide who’s playing who is the RPI, which is calculated by a formula that absolutely no one outside of the NCAA has been really able to figure out 100% (that we know of). According to the latest ranking (released Sunday, shortly after all the conference tournaments ended), the Niners are at 17th. In our opinion that should get them a first round home game on Thursday at the very least. As for a top 16 seed (which grants them a first round bye), that is a slim possibility, but not too likely especially considering the loss to VCU (who is now 14th). A win against them would have possibly been enough; running the table and beating Saint Louis in the championship would have definitely done the trick.

Here’s what one site projects. Of course, we won’t know for sure until Monday at 5:30 when the selections are announced on But we’d be pleasantly if the Niners were seeded; either way, as Charlotte fans are already aware, it may not even mean a thing in the end.

For research purposes, here’s a list of the NCAA’s conference champions this year, along with their RPIs:
America East: UMBC (51)
