Good afternoon Charlotte 49ers fans, and welcome to our inaugural Pick Axe Digest live blog! I’ll be dispersing our comments throughout the game as the Niners take on third seeded Georgetown in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The winner takes on the victor of VCU/Syracuse next Sunday–if it’s the Cuse, then the game will be at Transamerica, but if it’s VCU, the Green and White will be treking up to Richmond to play the Rams for a third time this year, a team they are 0-2 against. Let’s go!
It’s all over. Georgetown 1, Charlotte 0. It’s been a great run for the Niners. Thanks for following along with us.
Some technical difficulties have knocked us out so if you’re following along, apologies. But the Niners need a miracle.
Charlotte dodges a gigantic bullet. Hoyas shot literally hit the inside of the post. Wow.
And Rosenberry nearly has his second but Davis comes up with the save.
GTown almost takes it 2-0 but a great sliding tackle by Darby in the box keeps it right where it is.
No dice for Charlotte on the corner. 23 minutes left
Niners another big chance. Caughran shot outside the box saved by Gomes. Corner for Niners
Meanwhile Charlotte nearly gets a chance but Perez can’t quite connect on the cross. Still 1-0 Hoyas.
Rosenberry nearly had his second but some tough Niner D overcomes in the end.
Niners looking to maintain the play in this second half.
Wow. Charlotte nearly scores on Gentile header. Dangerous, dangerous chance but Niners can’t finish.
Another foul in a critical spot by Georgetown. YC caution on Joey Dillon. Dangerous free kick for Charlotte
Foul on Georgetown in a dangerous spot. But the ensuing Charlotte free kick sails out. Goal kick
But I’m not 100% sure because the video feed went out once more.
GU’s Neumann will check back in after going off due to injury earlier. Few minutes ago Charlotte nearly ties on Kirkbride header
Video feed is back but three fans are blocking the camera. So apparently the Neumann sub was due to injury as we come to find out
Fouls starting to pile up a little for the Hoyas. At least three or four this half so far. Charlotte 13 fouls to GTown’s 11.
Muller attempt blocked by Charlotte. Still 1-0 Hoyas.
Gtown sub at 49:49. Snoh in, Neumann out.
Video feed is out again so our blogging abilities will be a little bit hampered.
Foul on Charlotte. Yellow card has been assessed to Aaron Weldon. Corner for Georgetown
Just as I type that, Gentile comes into the attacking zone but his pass to Rex sails out of bounds. Good start for Niners though.
Time for 2nd half. I just tweeted this @PickAxeDigest…it’s time for the Niners to show that they aren’t just a really good team but a great time. They have faced adversity before and overcome it…will need to do so once more.
Goal kick for the Niners late. Looked to get a late chance but nothing comes of it. 1-0 Georgetown at HT.
Rosenberry with his first career goal.
Goal Georgetown. Off a corner. 1-0 Hoyas.
Georgetown had a good attempt but diving tackle ends it. But they repossess and force a corner.
Good attempt by Charlotte late in the 1st but Weldon’s shot sails past endline. Goal kick GTown
Another chance by GTown. Muller with a great ball ahead to Neumann but Davis comes out to gobble it up. Still scoreless.
Little chippy as teams having a little chat with each other. No cards shown just yet.
Hoyas with another chance but Thomas Allen stops the attempt. Still 0-0.
Correction on earler Niner shot–Gentile took it and was blocked by GTown.
It was Charlotte’s first SOG as they nearly took a 1-0 lead in the latter stages of the half.
GTown’s Riemer intended for Neumann in attacking zone goes long. On the other end…Charlotte with a great chance but stopped by Gomez. Rex I believe with the shot.
Only one true chance (and that’s been by the Hoyas) but other than that nothing. Scoreless
Charlotte sub. Isaac Caughran in, Owen Darby out.
Hmm…Charlotte nearly got burned by a quick throw in by GTown in attacking zone. Davis ultimately able to grab it, though. A good ball by Hoyas though.
Aidan Kirkbride a long pass towards the box sails past the back line. Goal kick Hoyas. Halfway through 1st half and still 0-0/
QCA members at the game apparently asked to sit down by GTown gameday staff. Free kick for Charlotte
A foul on Charlotte brings up a GTown free kick that is gathered and cleared by Niners D.
Nice ball in the box by Hoyas’ Riemer but Niners snap down on D.
Video feed back up finally.
But a foul is called on Charlotte. Their fifth of the game. Corner comes to nothing.
Corner kick for the Niners…15 minute mark. 0-0. Smith to take
Corner upcoming for Georgetown taken by Neumann…cleared by Niners but Donnie Smith issued a yellow card caution. 12 minutes in and it’s 0-0.
Foul on Charlotte. 9 1/2 minutes in and Charlotte 3-2 in fouls.
Apologize if there are any breaks in entries but the live video coming out of Georgetown isn’t exactly the best…
Rex taken out on a hard tackle by Tommy Muller–no foul. Goal kick coming for Niners.
Free kick right to the left of the box for the Niners on a restart.
Not the best of starts for the Georgetown PxP man, who has called us the “Charlotte Eagles” twice and called Biko Bradnock-Brennan “Brennan-Bradnock”.
Corner by Hoyas’ Newman does not come to fruition and is cleared out of play just 90 seconds in.
Underway. Niners have had posession early but Georgetown’s Braden has an attempt stopped by Klay Davis.
