The night owls (or early birds) got a post-Thanksgiving treat from the Charlotte 49ers, as they topped Oral Roberts 72-58 to advance to the final of the Great Alaska Shootout. They’ll face Northeastern for the title Sunday morning at 12:30 ET.
Defense was the name of the game in this one as the Niners held the Golden Eagles to just 58 points, their lowest total thus far this season. Warren Miles, averaging well over 20 points so far and coming off a 33-point outing against Loyola Marymount a night before, was held to just 15 points. On the offensive side, hats off to DeMario Mayfield who owned the free throw line tonight (14-16 from the stripe, 17 points overall). Pierria Henry (five steals) also helped on the defensive end as the Niners overcame a tough night from Chris Braswell, who was only 4-12 from the field (11 points). A nod to Ivan Benkovic, who hit a couple of big threes in the 2nd half to help his team’s cause.
Northeastern awaits, and they’re coming off a big win over NCAA tournament mainstay Belmont earlier in the day to put them in the final. Do the Niners have one more win in them? We’ll find out soon.
