It’s been a few weeks since we’ve had a really busy weekend for the Charlotte 49ers, but with the men and women’s basketball team both hosting games on the same weekend (and playing well), Halton Arena is sure to be buzzing. Here’s a brief look at the action set to take place on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday–men’s basketball (6-0) vs. ECU (7pm)
The game against the Pirates is always circled on the schedule as it’s a chance for Niner Nation to get a look at their in-state rivals (soon to be headed to the Big East–in football at least). As things would turn out, both teams are undefeated (Charlotte 6-0, ECU 5-0), adding a little something extra to this year’s game. We’ll have a full preview up this weekend.
Sunday–women’s basketball (4-1) vs. Florida State (2pm)
The team has designated this as a blackout, and with the Seminoles being a marquee opponent, expect a little more interest in this game than normal. After a disappointing 14-17 (6-10 ACC) record last year following a 24-8 record and an NCAA bid in 2010-11, FSU is off to a 6-0 start this year (including a win over #17 Vanderbilt) and are receiving votes in both national polls. Cara Consuegra’s crew has a chance to pick up a signature win in front of their home fans on Sunday.
Also this weekend, track and field opens its season this Saturday morning as they travel to the JDL College Kickoff Classic in Winston-Salem. The women were picked to win the Atlantic 10 title in their final season in the league, while the men were picked behind Rhode Island as the conference runner-up.
