Some quick thoughts on the Charlotte 49ers’ 73-69 win over the Davidson Wildcats…
–Say what you want about Davidson being a SoCon team, but they’ve shown that they can match up against some of the top teams in the country. For the Niners to leave Belk Gym with a win speaks to their character. They could have easily packed it in at any point in the game (i.e. the flagrant 1 foul on Willie Clayton, the 9-0 Davidson run in the second half), but they simply beared down on defense and made shots when they had to.
–Big nod to Pierria Henry. Not only was he active on the defensive end (as always), but he sank four free throws in a row to seal the game. Henry has had his struggles at the line, so for him to overcome them shows tremendous focus and will.
–The Niners simply forced the issue inside, even though it didn’t work for them in the first half. Chris Braswell was able to shake off a slow start and get it going a little in the second half to finish with 15, including a huge 3 late. Clayton wasn’t afraid to get his nose dirty and ended up with 12 points and six rebounds–five offensive. Darion Clark had 14 points to go along with 9 boards, including a key offensive rebound that ultimately set up Bras’ 3.
–Halton Arena should be quite active on Sunday at 2pm when Central Michigan comes to town. It’s easy to think that the Niners should win, but Central will definitely be coming in ready to hand Charlotte their first loss.
