Some Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer news to pass along today. Senior mid/forward and Queen City Army favorite Donnie Smith has been invited to be part of the MLS Combine taking place in Florida next month.
A total of 54 seniors have been invited to the combine, which gives MLS teams a chance to take a look at the graduating class ahead of the SuperDraft, which will be held a little more than a month from today–January 17 in Indianapolis. Donnie is hardly the first Niner to be invited; Evan James and Charles Rodriguez were members of the 2012 combine this past January and were drafted by Montreal Impact and DC United in the supplemental draft, respectively.
Smith exits Niner Nation as a key member of the 2011 squad that made it to the national championship game against North Carolina. This season, the Matthews, NC native and Charlotte Catholic grad scored four goals and four assists (12 points), racking up a total of 14 tallies in his career. We’ll keep an eye on Donnie’s progress at the combine and will pass along any information once we get it, but for now, our congrats to him on the invite.
