While the Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball team has been off to a good start (10-1), the women can’t be ignored. Led by a career high five three pointers by Hillary Sigmon, they’re now 7-2 following a 57-47 victory tonight at NC A&T.
Sigmon (17 points) was on fire throughout the night–she was 5-8 from beyond the arc and 6-10 from the field overall. Not to be ignored was another strong night by Amanda Dowe (5-10 from the field for 11 points, 13 rebounds). Ayanna Holmes, in for usual starter Ny Hammonds, was solid in playing all 40 minutes, chipping in 8 points and five rebounds.
But Sigmon stole the show on this night. After going 11-40 in the first eight games of the season, she was able to catch fire and post her best shooting performance of her career. She did have six turnovers, but hopefully she has found her stroke with just under a month to go before conference play begins.
Hats off to the Niner defense as well. The Aggies were held to just one field goal in the final 12:40 of the first half, but none in the final five minutes. The 47 points allowed were the least since the 31 given up to NCCU back on November 10.
Charlotte is back home for the first time in 13 days as they host Davidson on Friday night at 7pm inside Halton Arena. After Christmas, they’re on the road again at the GSU Holiday & Hoops Tournament December 29 and 30 in Atlanta.
