The beat goes on for the Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball team. Pierria Henry (14) and Willie Clayton (12) each scored in double figures as the Niners improved to 11-1 (6-0 at Halton Arena) with a 68-52 win over Radford tonight.
The Niners made it look relatively easy for most of the night, going up as much as 19 in the first half and taking a 38-19 lead to the locker room. Clayton and Henry both had 8 at the break, with P hitting a pair of threes in the opening frame, including one just before the buzzer (3-6 overall from the field) and Willie shooting 4-7 from the floor. It was another fill-the-stat-sheet night for Henry overall (14 points, 5 boards, 2 assists, five steals, and a block).
In the second half, the Highlanders got to within 12 following a pair of Blake Smith free throws with 7:59 left in the game (and again with 3:13 left after a Rashun Davis three), but that was as near as they got as the home team had it in the bag. Charlotte shot a solid 51.8% from the field (29-56) and outrebounded Radford 36-30 while holding them to 32.7% FG (2-14 from beyond the arc). Clayton was responsible for seven boards, including five offensive, as he continues to establish a tough, hard-working presence inside. His development has just been impressive, and we’ve made mention before of his passion and work ethic every time he goes out.
Meanwhile, Chris Braswell had a tough night (21 minutes, 2-8 FG, 5 points). But it was a good sign for the Niners that they were able to win without him being at his best. They outscored the Highlanders in the paint by a remarkable 50-28 count (h/t to Niner Times sports editor Nathan Butler for posting that stat) even without Bras’ contributions.
Up next for Charlotte: Florida State at the Cable Box Saturday afternoon at 2pm.
