After a letdown against Toledo in yesterday’s opening game of the GSU Holiday & Hoops Tournament, the Charlotte 49ers weren’t about to drop back-to-back games for the first time this season. Jennifer Hailey and Hillary Sigmon combined for 34 points on 11-25 shooting to key the Niners (9-3) to a 63-48 win over Mississippi Valley State in the tournament’s consolation game.
This one was headlined by Sigmon’s hot shooting from outside. The sophomore connected for five threes (tying a career high) and finished with a game-high 18 points. Hailey went 5-13 from the field but was 6-9 from the line for 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Amanda Dowe, while just barely held out of double digit scoring (9 points, 4-11 FG), had a huge game off the glass, ripping down 16 rebounds to finish just shy of a double-double. Ny Hammonds had eight points, 11 assists and five steals despite six turnovers.
On the other end, Alia Frank (14 points, 5-11 FG) led the way for the Devilettes (3-8, and a team that may have the most unique nickname among the Niners’ opponents so far). Jasmyne Sanders finished with 10. An interesting stat: Charlotte finished with just eight fouls on the day while sending MVSU to the line just four times–all four attempts were taken by Frank, who made three of them.
Despite the win, coach Cara Consegura won’t like the turnover total. The Niners committed 21 turnovers to MVSU’s 23.
Charlotte heads back to the Queen City where they’ll play back to back home games, starting on Thursday against Coppin State.
