Charlotte 49ers basketball: Niners sweat it out against Fordham to go to 3-0 in A-10

The Charlotte 49ers needed to sweat a little before picking up their third Atlantic 10 win of the season. Led by DeMario Mayfield’s 18 point effort, the Niners kept their conference record unblemished with a 74-68 victory over Fordham at Halton Arena.

Charlotte (15-2, 3-0) could never get it to a comfortable margin and led by only 4, 67-63, with 1:07 left following a Mayfield layup. But Branden Frazier’s three point attempt with 23 seconds left fell short and the Niners were able to ice the game away from the free throw line. Both teams did struggle from the stripe tonight–Fordham went 18-36 while Charlotte finished 20-30.

Two other Niners hit double figures besides Mayfield. J.T. Thompson (4-4 FG, 4-4 FT) put up 12 points and enjoyed his best performance in a Charlotte uniform. Darion Clark scored 11 points (4-5 FG, 3-5 FT) was the other double digit scorer. Chris Braswell (3-10 FG) had another tough shooting day, but led the team with 8 rebounds to go along with his seven points. Charlotte was outrebounded, however, 44-35.

Frazier, the team’s leading scorer, played the entire way and led Fordham with 23 points, including 7-14 from the floor and 3-7 behind the arc. Mandell Thomas put up 13. Chris Gaston, a first team All A-10 selection, was held to only 3 points, but led the team with 10 rebounds.

The Niners hit the road again to play Richmond, Saturday night at 6, looking to go 4-0 in A-10 play.

In Kingston, RI, the Charlotte 49ers women’s basketball improved to 12-4, 1-1 in conference play by beating Rhode Island 53-42. Jennifer Hailey led the Niners with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Amanda Dowe chipped in 13 points and 11 boards. The women host Xavier Sunday afternoon at 2 at Halton Arena.
