It’s mid-January, and with February around the corner, the 2013 Atlantic 10 baseball poll is out. The Charlotte 49ers are picked to finish 4th in their final season in the league before shipping off to Conference USA.
Charlotte had a disappointing season, going 21-32 (10-9 A-10). But they return a host of upperclassmen, including seniors Tony Montalbano, J.J. Elseser, Corbin Shive and second-leading hitter Shane Basen along with juniors Tyler Barnette and Justin Seager. They also bring in a recruiting class of nine freshmen and several junior college players.
Saint Louis was picked to win the Atlantic 10; Rhode Island and newcomer VCU were chosen 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Dayton, Richmond, Xavier and Saint Joseph’s rounded out the top 8. Only the top seven get in, though, to the conference tournament, which will be held at the Hayes from May 22-25. The Niners may have the homefield advantage on their side if they’re able to make it in.
First pitch against Delaware State is exactly a month away at the Hayes–let’s hope the weather holds up that weekend to get some baseball in. The stadium, by the way, is sporting a little of a new look in preparation for the A-10 tournament.
