Some bits and pieces of Charlotte 49ers news

There’s some Charlotte 49ers news that we didn’t get to in the past week–let’s get you caught up on what’s going on around Niner Nation.

Women’s Basketball
The women are 3-1 in the A-10 (alone in 4th) and part of that is thanks to Jennifer Hailey, named the league’s player of the week today for the second time this year (and for her career). Hailey had a monster game at Saint Louis yesterday, nearly going off for a rare triple-double (23 points, 14 rebounds, seven blocks).
“She was unstoppable,” coach Cara Consuegra told Charlotte sports information after the game. “They were extremely physical with her [but] she didn’t let anything bother her [...and] finished well. She was relentless. When Jenn plays like that it makes our team so much better.”
The senior is the team’s best scorer (15.5 ppg–4th overall in the league) and rebounder (11.4 rpg–tops in the A-10) and has teamed up with classmate Amanda Dowe (10.8 ppg/10.7 rpg) to provide a potent one-two punch for Consuegra. In conference-only stats, Hailey leads all scorers with 19.3 rpg and rebounders with 13.3 rpg. She and the rest of the Niners head to St. Bonaventure on Wednesday before taking on Duquesne at Halton on Super Bowl Sunday…

Track and Field
The Niners have looked every part of A-10 contender this season as they are off to a flying start. At the UAB Blazer Invitational, Katrina Wright broke the school record in the weight throw (55’2″), while T’Sheila Mungo (1:11.03) set a new 500m run standard at the Virginia Tech Invitational; her time was the highest in the nation for that week. Joining her in a record performance was Jake Deaton (shot put, 57’11″), while many personal records were set throughout the course of the past few weeks. Today, Anthony Campbell was named the conference’s rookie of the week for his performance at Virginia Tech…

Tennis
While women’s tennis wasn’t able to get anything going this weekend, the men’s tennis team was able to get a match in against Tennessee Tech, which they won, 6-1.
“Today was a solid overall effort from our team…I’m pleased with how we competed and am looking forward to a good week of practice,” coach Billy Boykin told Charlotte sports information after the match.
The men host Campbell this Saturday at 2pm, while the women travel to USC Upstate on Friday before heading back home to take on Campbell as well, also at 2pm. Two newcomers join the women’s team (Tyler Baker from Fort Bragg, NC and Jessica Perez from Charlotte) while the men welcome Jordi Massallé Ferrer from Spain and Carl Solik from Chapel Hill…

Men’s Soccer
The Seattle Sounders selected Jennings Rex in the 4th round of the MLS Supplemental Draft. Rex finished his Charlotte career with 51 points (24 goals), including a team-leading 11 goals this season for the A-10 regular season champions…
