Notre Dame (MA) power forward Matthew Atewe has listed the Charlotte 49ers in his top six, the 2013 prospect announced this evening on Twitter.
“Clemson, Wake Forest, Auburn, Nebraska, Nevada and Charlotte are the final schools that I am focused on for next year…” @vi_massiah

Atewe, originally from Brampton, ON, is a three-star prospect on Rivals.com. Currently Auburn, Dayton, Georgia Tech, Kansas State, Marquette, Nebraska, Nevada and St. Bonaventure have offered him, along with Charlotte. He was scheduled to take an official visit to the campus back in September but later changed him mind–it’s not known when he’ll make his way here. He has, however, taken officials to K-State (September 14) and Nebraska (January 5).
We’ll see what happens with Atewe. Either way, there have been no verbal commits for the Niners as of yet, nor did they pick up any early signings (early signing period was November 21-28). April 17-May 15 is the regular signing period, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see some verbals come down the pike this month.
The Niners will have some holes to fill as they will have at minimum
five three scholarships free this summer. This assumes DeMario Mayfield, who has graduated but has been suspended indefinitely, remains with the team next year, but any speculation of his departure is just that–speculation, and we won’t know for a few months yet. If he leaves, that makes four, with Shawn Lester presumably being ready to play.
