The Charlotte 49ers improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium with a 9-3 win over Youngstown State (2-7), the opening game in a four-game weekend set.
Winning pitcher: Tyler Barnette (2-0) went seven strong, allowing just three runs (two earned) off of four hits while striking out five and walking two.
Losing pitcher: Patrick O’Brien (1-2), who went five and allowed five runs (four earned) and nine hits, walking two and striking out four.
Quick recap: Charlotte never trailed in this one, scoring four in the bottom of the first. Justin Seager‘s two-run triple brought in Shane Basen and Justin Roland, followed by Brad Elwood’s RBI single. After a Brett Lang single and a Grant Dunnegan pop-out to third, Elwood and Lang moved up on a errant throw to 2nd by Penguins pitcher Josh White on a steal attempt, ultimately scoring Elwood to make it 4-0. They would tack on one in the third (Lang double-play groundout allowed Elwood to score from third), three in the 7th (on Seager, Lang and Nick Daddio RBI singles) and one in the 8th (Dunnegan RBI double with two out). Drew Dosch was responsible for all of Youngstown State’s runs (RBI single in the 3rd and a two-run home run in the 5th).
Top performer: Seager going away as he continued his torrid pace to start the season. He was 4-5 at the plate with 3 RBI–his four hits and 3 RBI are career highs. In fact, he fell a homer shy of the cycle (1B, 2 2B, 3B). For the season, he’s batting .518.
Stat of the game: 36–the number of consecutive games Justin Roland has reached base safely (dating back to last year).
