Make it 5-0 at home for the Charlotte 49ers baseball team. Starting pitcher John Hamilton went seven strong innings as the Niners (6-2) shut down Youngstown State, 3-1, in a game that was originally scheduled to be part of a doubleheader but was scaled back to a single game due to weather.
Winning pitcher: John Hamilton (1-1), who pitched a four hit shutout while walking only one and striking out five.
Losing pitcher: Blake Aquadro (1-2); he allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking three and striking out three.
Save: Wes Hatley (1).
Quick recap: All three Charlotte runs scored in the bottom of the fourth. With Shane Basen on second and J.J. Elseser on third with one out, Brad Elwood laid down a bunt up the middle. Aquadro fielded the ball, but his errant throw allowed Basen and Elseser to score. After that, Brett Lang stroked a single down the left field line, bringing Elwood in all the way from first. That was all Charlotte needed as Hamilton was on all day.
Top performer: No question–Hamilton. He carried the Niners on a day where offense was at a premium.
Stat of the game: 5–the number of doubles Justin Seager has registered this week. He was “only” 1-3 today as the double was his sole hit of the afternoon.
Next up: A doubleheader (originally scheduled for today, moved to tomorrow) beginning at 1pm.
Tomorrow’s starters: Brock Hudgens (1-0) will go for Charlotte in Game 1, while Ryan Kronos (0-1) gets the call for YSU. Game 2 will see Micah Wells (0-1) start on the hill for the Niners; he’ll face Robert Switka (0-1).
Tomorrow’s weather: Mostly sunny, 47 degrees.
