Charlotte 49ers senior Jennifer Hailey was rewarded for a fine season as she was named the Atlantic 10 player of the year on Thursday afternoon.
For Niner fans, this should come as no surprise. Hailey showed throughout the year that she was the top all around player in the league–she averaged 15.4 points (3rd in the league) and led the conference in rebounding at 11.9 boards per game. She also recorded 74 blocks (9 less than the top shot blocker, Temple’s Victoria Macaulay), breaking her own single season school record. Very few players could dominate a game this year like she could, and the player of the year award was certainly well earned.
Amanda Dowe and Ny Hammonds were named to the conference’s third team. Dowe tore down 11.5 boards a contest (second to Hailey in the league), while Hammonds dished out a league-leading 6.7 assists.
Charlotte will play either Temple or Xavier on Saturday in the A-10 quarterfinals at Hagan Arena in Philadelphia.
