Charlotte 49ers basketball: Temple awaits women in A-10 quarters

The Charlotte 49ers know who their quarterfinal opponent will be in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals tomorrow at Hagan Arena. The Temple Owls knocked off the Xavier Musketeers, 52-45, in Friday’s third opening round game. It sets up a matchup between the tenth-seeded Owls and the second-seeded 49ers tomorrow at around 5pm.

Charlotte blew out the Owls at Halton Arena, 66-43, on February 6. Ny Hammonds scored a team-high 16 points, while Jenn Hailey registered 10 points and 14 rebounds. Victoria Macaulay pitched in 15 for the visitors. The Niners benefited from a ice-cold shooting performance by Temple in the 2nd half (5-24) en route to the 23-point victory.

Outside of Macaulay, the Owls don’t really possess a whole lot of other offensive firepower. Rateska Brown can provide some scoring off the bench (10.1 ppg), but if the Niners shut those two down and get the big two (Jenn Hailey and Amanda Dowe) working inside, they should win this one quite handily.

But don’t discount another key factor that may pop up: this is a virtual home game for the Owls. Their fans will almost certainly be out in force tomorrow so it might make for a little bit of a hostile environment for the Niners. Add that to the fact that Charlotte has never won in tournament action in Philly (0-3).

We’ll see what goes down tomorrow. Anything can happen in tournament play–including a 12 seed nearly knocking off a five seed.
