March Madness: Atlantic 10 gets five teams in NCAA Tournament

Conference champ Saint Louis earned the Atlantic 10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, and will be joined by Butler, Temple, La Salle and VCU.

The 16th-ranked Billikens (27-6) topped the Rams, 62-56, earlier today to punch their ticket. They are a four seed in the Midwest Region and will take on the 13th-seeded New Mexico State Aggies from the WAC in San Jose, with the winner to play the (5) Oklahoma State Cowboys from the Big 12 or (12) the Oregon Ducks from the Pac-12.

But VCU (26-8), ranked 25th in the polls, was probably bound to get an automatic bid anyway due to their in-season performance. A five seed in the South Region, they will play 12th-seeded Akron Zips–the winner will take on the (4) Michigan Wolverines from the Big Ten or the (13) San Diego State Aztecs from the Mountain West.

The Temple Owls (23-9), also expected to get in, are a nine seed in the East Region; they draw an eighth-seeded North Carolina State Wolfpack (ACC) in Dayton. The winner plays the winner of the game between the top-seeded Indiana Hoosiers from the B1G and the 16 seed–the winner of the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds (NEC)/JMU Dukes (CAA) First Four game.

The Butler Bulldogs (26-8), a six seed, saw their stock drop after a few tough losses in the second half of the season, but also made it into the field, unsurprisingly. They play in Lexington against the 11th-seeded Bucknell Bison (Patriot League) in the East Region, with the winner to play either the third-seeded Marquette Golden Eagles (Big East) or the 14th-seeded Davidson Wildcats (Southern).

La Salle (21-9), who beat a ranked VCU and Butler in back-to-back games during the regular season, was one of the last four teams in. They clinched a First Four matchup with Boise State (MWC), with the winner of that game to play the fourth-seeded Kansas State Wildcats (Big 12) in the West Region in Kansas City.

Unsurprisingly, the Charlotte 49ers were left out of the field, and may be on the bubble for an NIT birth as well.
