Charlotte 49ers softball loses DH at N.C. State

The Charlotte 49ers softball team lost a double-header in Raleigh to in-state rival, NC State, 2-0 and 10-3, on Wednesday.  The 49ers drop to 14-16; the Wolfpack are 17-16-1.

Bethaney Wells of NC State hit a home run to lead off the 4th inning of Game 1 to make it 2-0.  That is what the score stayed at.  Wells is the home run leader the last two years for the ‘Pack.

Katie Watkins of the 49ers is now 8-10 as a pitcher.  NC State’s Emily Wieman threw a no-hitter, the first of her career…unfortunately, it was against us.  Sadly, the last 12 49ers went down not even getting to 1st base.  The only blemish for NC State was one walk by us.

Too bad this wasn’t men’s basketball.  They call NC State by the nickname, “Charlotte North,” since the three assistants all used to coach at Charlotte, including Bobby Lutz.

In Game 2, the Niners started in a 5-0 hole in the 1st Inning.  In the 3rd inning, Alex Rogers got 2 RBI’s by knocking in Chelsea Stamey and Natalie Capone to make it 5-2, and that’s the closest they would get.

Chelsea Lisikatos is 5-5 after getting chased away by the Wolfpack in that dreadful 1st inning.  Kalie Lang finished the game for Lisikatos.

The 49ers go back to Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, April 6 at Dayton in a double-header.  Their next home conference match is April 12-13 vs. Rhode Island.  The 49ers are 2-4 in the conference.  They also host a non-conference match on April 10, a double-header vs. Furman.

-In women’s tennis, the 49ers lost at the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs by a score of 4-3.  What was disappointing was the ‘Dawgs were down a woman on singles and could not field a 3rd doubles team, but still managed to win by winning two of three doubles matches after splitting the singles.  (Which the singles split included the forfeit, and the only doubles win was the forfeit.)

The 49ers women who got the win were #2 Singles, Natsuko Takayanagi, 7-6 and 7-5 over Yasmine Doost, #4 Singles, Tyler Baker, 4-6, 6-2, and 10-8 over Valeriia Popko, and #6 Singles, Jessica Perez by forfeit.  The only doubles winners were #3 Doubles, Tyler Baker and Emmanuelle Briant, also by forfeit.

Ladies’ Tennis now stands at 9-5.  They host Senior Day on April 11 at 2:30 p.m. vs. Furman in the friendly confines of Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.  The Seniors to be honored for four years of service are:  Emmanuelle Briant, Anna Ekelund, Iveta Guneva, Ginny Johnson, and Alexandra Zinn.  Senior Night should have an international flavor as Briant is from France, Guneva is from Bulgaria, and Ekelund and Zinn are from Sweden.

As the ladies close down their season there is a match on April 12 at the cross-county rival Davidson Wildcats.  Or as some of our fans call them, the LOLcats.  And the A-10 Tournament is April 17-21 in Charlotteville, Virginia.  Win the tourney, and go to the NCAAs, ladies!

-The baseball team lost 6-0 at USC Upstate.  I still call them USC Spartanburg because hardly anyone outside of South Carolina knows what an upstate is.  Both teams are now 17-11.

Now to those of you wondering what an upstate is, in South Carolina they call the area around the coast the Low Country.  They call the inland area in the Appalachian foothills, Upstate.  (Kind of ironic to call foothills that, but South Carolina doesn’t have any real mountains.)  Also, go ask someone in California, New York, Florida, etc. where USC Upstate is?  They’ll probably think Southern Cal has a campus north of LA.  That’s why I can’t stand it.

Now back to the game.  Charlotte starter, Jason Harris, is now 1-2 with a 3.16 ERA.  He pitched 4.1 innings.  In the 4th inning there were two errors which caused two unearned runs.   Always hard to see the other team get gifts.  Also pitching for the 49ers were Ryan Mas, Wes Hatley, and Sean Pope.  Their ERAs are 1.71, 1.80, and 13.50.  Pitching the entire game for USC Upstate was Chris Cox, 2-2 with a 2.81 ERA.

The 49ers will be away from conference this weekend with a home series vs. UNC Asheville.  The dates are April 5-7.  The April 5 game has fireworks, so the kids will be stoked.  Don’t forget that the A-10 Tournament is here from May 22-25.

The Sports Calendar for the other 49ers teams until next Tuesday is:
