The Mike Rice situation at Rutgers may have an effect on the Charlotte 49ers. Jerome Seagears, who is one of three players at the school to transfer, has been reached out to by many schools, including Charlotte.
Seagears, a sophomore guard, averaged 6.5 points per game and 2.2 rebounds over 31 games, 19 of which he started. He was a decent shooter from beyond the arc (38.1%), an area the Niners could have used a lot of help in this year.
It’s important to note that since Seagears is a transfer, he will have to sit out a year before playing in accordance with NCAA regulations; however, belief in some circles is that the possibility exists that he and the two other Rutgers transfers could be granted a waiver allowing them to play immediately. It’s also important to note that Charlotte actually offered Seagears out of Flora Lawrence Academy in Red Springs (about 2.5 hours east of Charlotte) during his recruiting process in 2011.
Other teams said to be in the hunt for Seagears’s services: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Auburn, Cincinnati, DePaul, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kansas State, Maryland and West Virginia. With those names being floated around, we could be looking at a decent mid-major prospect that could do well in the Queen City if he chooses to come here.
