Joey Coulter is a student at UNC Charlotte. He is studying Mechanical Engineering with a Concentration in Motorsports at The William States Lee College of Engineering. What a coincidence! Because Mr. Coulter is a driver in the Camping World Truck Series of NASCAR.
Mr. Coulter is featured in the Spring quarterly issue of UNC Charlotte magazine for Alumni. Did you know UNC Charlotte was Coulter’s first choice for college even though he is from Miami? Yes, our motorsports program has national attention.
Coulter has had various sponsors since he has been racing. One is Mama Lucia: Fully Cooked Meatballs. Hey, I’m getting hungry, Joey. Another sponsor Coulter has used is the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation raises money for those that are paralyzed. It’s good to see a good cause get attention.
Joey has been in the truck series since 2011. Did you know he was Rookie of the Year? In 2012, he finished 3rd in points. It’s amazing to see a 2nd year driver come close to the championship. Joey wants to win it all this year, and is currently in 12th in points after the April 14th race in Rockingham. The race in Rockingham was the NC Education Lottery 200. Joey is trying to help the education of youngsters in NC.
That’s right, our 49er athlete was racing here in good old North Carolina. And he will be even closer on May 17th at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Go out and cheer on a fellow Niner.
So how has Joey Coulter’s career been going? Well, in 1998 is when he started with the Florida WKA Championship Series. (WKA is for racing Karts size cars.) In 1999, Joey expanded to also race in the WKA Hortsman Gold Cup Series. It must be hard to drive in two series at once. Joey managed to get 50 wins and two state titles.
The year 2005 was a banner year for Coulter as he won just about everything. He won the Summer Nationals, a 2nd National Championship, two state titles in the Briggs Junior light and heavy divisions, a 2nd Naples Championship, and started in Florida FASTRUCK.
In 2006, Coulter moved up to Florida FASTRUCK Pro Series, and won four of his 1st eight races. In 2007, Coulter tried stock cars for the 1st time in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series. Coulter started in ARCA in 2009, and won in that series in 2010.
Since coming to the Camping World Truck Series of NASCAR, Coulter has switched from Chevrolet to Toyota. This came when he changed teams. Coulter started with Richard Childress Racing, and is now with Kyle Busch Motorsports. (RCR was the team that Dale Earnhardt, Sr. raced for. Dale, Sr.’s daughter, Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, is a 49er graduate who is the Business Manager for her brother, Dale Earnhardt, Jr.) Coulter has also done a handful of NASCAR Nationwide Series races.
Coulter usually studies on Sundays, as that is usually the only day he’s not racing or in school. He even uses some of his motorsports studies in the classroom on the truck.
