Although the spotlight was on the Charlotte 49ers football team this weekend as they played their first ever spring game, the baseball team was active as well. Contributor Kevin Harward looks back at a week 10 that started rough but saw the team get back on track.
The Diamond Niners went 2-2 on the week with mid-week losses to NC State and at Winthrop. The week was a success due to taking 2 of 3 at Xavier over the weekend. Xavier was 2nd in the conference standings prior to this weekend and are now tied with the 9ers for 4th. All three of the games this weekend were decided by 2 or less runs with the Niners scoring late to take the last two games. The Niners are now 24-16 overall and 8-4 in the Atlantic 10. They are 7-2 in weekend series this season so far and 3-1 in A-10 series.

Player of the Week:
Michael Green- Senior outfielder Michael Green has been named this week’s Diamond Niner Fans Player of the Week. Green led the Niners in hits this week batting .333 on the week including 7 hits, 2 of which were doubles. The senior had 4 of his 7 hits in Saturday’s win over Xavier, which was a career high and 2 hits in Sunday’s win over Xavier. He is currently leading the Niners with a .412 average in A-10 games this year. Green has also played solid defensively in CF for the Niners.
Pitcher of the Week:
Brock Hudgens-For the second straight week. Junior righty Brock Hudgens has been named the Diamond Niner Fans Pitcher of the Week. Hudgens went 8 strong innings in Sunday’s start at Xavier allowing only 2 ER on 5 hits. He struck out a career high 10 batters and only allowed 1 walk. He currently leads the Niner’s pitching staff in ERA (3.10), Opposing Batting Average (.236), and Strikeouts (52). He also leads all 49er starters with a 4-0 record.
–SS Justin Roland also batted .333 this week to match Michael Green. Roland added a SB, run scored and an RBI this week.
–JJ Elseser had the game winning RBI on a sac fly in Game 2 of the Xavier series. He had 2 RBI and scored 3 times on the week.
–Catcher Brett Lang added his 4th HR of the season and what proved to be the winning RBI in Sundays series clinching win over Xavier.
–Shane Basen also homered this weekend, his 2nd on the season. He has hit 4 of his 6 career HRs at Hayden Field. Basen and Brad Elwood each drove in 3 runs for the 49ers this week.
–LHP Jason Harris had a solid outing against a nationally ranked NC State team on Tuesday night at the Hayes. He scattered 7 hits over 6.1 innings, only allowing 2 ER.
–RHP Tyler Barnette had another solid Friday outing going 7 innings, striking out 3 and only allowing 2 ER.

Look for Kevin’s week 11 preview/review this weekend. Elsewhere, the softball team swept St. Bonaventure yesterday in a doubleheader originall scheduled for Saturday, but pushed back due to weather. The ladies took Game 1 2-0 and the nightcap by a 9-6 score. Four home runs were hit by Charlotte on the day, including a solo shot by Sam Slade in the first game followed by solo homers by Chelsea Ingersoll and Kalie Lang, as well as a three-run bomb by Bri Gwaltney, in game 2.
Katie Watkins (12-13) got both wins on the afternoon. She went the distance in the first game, pitching five-hit shutout ball while walking two and striking out seven, then pitched 3.1 innings of one-run, one-hit relief in game two, walking two and striking out two.
Charlotte visits South Carolina for a Wednesday non-league doubleheader before returning to A-10 play at home with a two-game set against Saint Louis (Friday/Saturday), followed by a Sunday double dip against Butler.
