Charlotte 49ers basketball: Niner assistant Odom finalist for UNCA job

Current Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball assistant coach Ryan Odom is a finalist to replace the departed Eddie Biedenbach as head coach at UNC Asheville, according to reports from the Citizen-Times out of Asheville.

For Odom, who will meet with Asheville staff tomorrow, this will actually be a homecoming, as he was an assistant under Biedenbach in 2000 at UNCA before stops at American (for three years) and Virginia Tech (for seven years) and after stints at South Florida and Furman. He has been part of Alan Major’s staff from the beginning when the soon-to-be four year head coach was hired in April 2010.

Coaching has certainly run in the family for the Odoms. Dave Odom, Ryan Odom’s father, was the head coach at South Carolina from 2001-2008 where he coached the team to an NCAA tournament bid in 2004 as well as back-to-back NIT titles in 2005 and 2006. Brother Lane Odom was a Niner assistant as a member of current N.C. State assistant Bobby Lutz’ first staff from 1998-2000 before a stint at Mizzou from 2000-06.

Also in the running: current UNCA assistant Nick McDevitt and former Ball State head man Billy Taylor.

We’ll keep a watch on this story and let you know of any further updates.
