Charlotte 49ers basketball: Making sense of a transfer exodus

We all knew DeMario Mayfield was kicked off the Charlotte 49ers this year, and with him already being a graduate with one year left, he can either transfer without sitting out, or go into the work force to take care of his son. I don’t think any of us thought Mayfield would be back. Then Darion Clark left, even though he played a lot. Now, Twitter and ninernation.net are all abuzz now that E. Victor Nickerson is gone. How many guys can this team lose? There’s already no one coming yet next year.

The team had improved the last three years under Alan Major from 10-20 to 13-17 to 21-12 and a NIT appearance.  I was worried the women’s basketball team might slip after a 26 win season and coming close to a NCAA appearance since two all conference players graduated, including Jennifer Hailey who was A-10 Player of the Year.  They will probably still make the WNIT, but, in my opinion, I don’t think they’ll come close to the NCAA Tournament next season.

But it looks like the men could be worse.  Who’s left?  Not many–just six scholarship players.  Fans could be looking at a repeat of the 10-20 season where the team was short handed, or worse.  If they sink again, it’s likely Alan Major is not getting an extension.

I know every team battles transfers, but this is the third guy leaving this year with eligibility left.  And these are guys that Major brought in, not guys he inherited.  Something is going wrong, and badly.  We better hope no one else leaves.  And any last minute recruits can’t be too good, or they would already be committed somewhere.  This ride to C-USA could get very bumpy.

–The golf team is leading the A-10 Tournament after the 2nd day by seven strokes.  The Niners have won every year in the A-10, getting the auto qualifier for the NCAA Tournament.

Charlotte is 13 strokes below par at 563.  VCU is seven strokes behind in 2nd.  Temple is in 3rd at eight strokes back.  There are 13 of the 16 conference teams in the A-10 tournament.  Sophomore Raoul Menard of Canada is tied for the tournament lead (-6).  Freshman Thomas Rowland of England (-4) is tied for fourth overall.

–Men’s tennis saw their season end in the A-10 semifinals, falling to George Washington, 4-0.
