The Charlotte 49ers basketball team is in on a 2013 power forward as they seek their first signing from that class. (Yes, there’s still players to be found from the 2013 class.) His name is Cameron Blakely, and he’s a senior at Apalachee (GA) who’s taking an official visit here today.
The 6’9″ Blakely currently lists no offers, but some UConn coaches were apparently in to see him not long ago. Georgia is also on his list of schools along with Furman, Maryland and Tennessee among others. He averaged almost a double-double (16.9 points and 9.9 rebounds) per game to go along with nearly four blocks per outing last year. While we’re on the subject of blocks, it’s important to note that he once had ten blocks in a game–that was against Cedar Shoals on November 17. One caveat, though, may be his shooting from the line, where we was 64% this past season.
Despite his numbers, it seems that Blakely has flown under the radar a little. He’s a big forward with shot-blocking ability who is active on the boards and has a good touch from the field (55%). If he signs with Charlotte and is able to make the transition to the college game, the Niners may have themselves quite a player as they head back to Conference USA in the fall.
UPDATE, 5/6, 10:40am: Blakely has committed, according to Sam Allen:
