It’s been eight years in the Atlantic 10, and the Charlotte 49ers have won their 7th Outdoor Women’s Track and Field Conference title. They and the men competed at home in the A-10 Championship. The women will go to Greensboro May 23-25 in the NCAA Tournament’s East regionals.
In addition to the women winning seven outdoor Track and Field titles, the men have won four. The men and women combined have won 21 conference titles in both outdoor and indoor Track and Field. Coach Robert Olesen just won his 21st Women’s Coach of the Year award. Yeah, the A-10 is totally owned by the Charlotte 49ers Women’s Track and Field team.
The men finished 2nd in the tournament. Anthony Campbell was named the Most Outstanding Male Rookie Performer. He set the meet record in the triple jump at 49 feet 9.25 inches. Jake Deaton won Most Outstanding Male Performer. He won the shot put at 57 feet 8.25 inches and the discus at 181 feet 3 inches.
Among the women’s top finishers, Maraya Slatter was the 800 meter champ at a time of 2:09.90, while Juanita Leto won the 100 meter hurdles in 13.93.
–Baseball pulled off a three game sweep of Butler to move into a three way tie for first in the A-10. The conference tourney is coming May 22-25 to Charlotte. The 49ers’ wins over the ‘Dawgs were 6-1, 4-2, and 5-0.
–In football news, head coach Brad Lambert competed in the Monday Pro-Am at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte this week. His caddie was offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen. Lambert’s teammates were Carolina Panthers Head Coach Ron Rivera and former Charlotte Hornets three-point specialist Dell Curry.
–Last weekend, men’s golf won their 7th A-10 title and qualified for their 9th straight NCAA Tournament. Tonight, the NCAA selection show will decide where 81 teams get split into six different regions. It will air at NCAA.com at 9 p.m.
