Charlotte 49ers Football: Texas safety Jawuan Johnson verbals

The latest Charlotte 49ers verbal from the class of 2014 is from the Lone Star State.

Jawuan Johnson, a safety from New Boston (TX), committed to the Niners yesterday, and becomes the first player from the state of Texas to choose to play football at Charlotte.

The staff was able to get their hands on a defensive recruit this time around after several verbals on the other side of the ball. Johnson, who had a strong season in 2012 (101 tackles, five picks, and three defensive TDs), carried offers from Grambling State and Southern Arkansas, a D-II squad. As for the Lions (12-1, 9-1 in district play), they advanced to the quarterfinals of the Conference 2A Division 1 playoffs before losing to eventual state runner-up Daingerfield.

Expect many more offers, and possible verbals, to come down the pike over the next few days. The Niners will hold their second elite prospect camp today for rising juniors and seniors as well as a 7-on-7 camp all day tomorrow. We’ll definitely keep an eye and ear out for any word that comes out and report it hear as well as on Twitter.

Johnson is verbal commitment number eight from the class of 2014. Keep track of who’s in the fold on our list of 2014 commitments.
