Coach Chris Redding and the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team will be out to prove some doubters wrong in their return to Conference USA. The league’s preseason poll was released today, and it shows the ladies as 12th out of 15 teams.
Topping the poll was Rice, followed by defending tournament champion and American Athletic-bound Tulsa. Newcomers UTSA and North Texas were third and fourth, respectively. Among the other newcomers: MTSU was 6th, FIU was 9th, FAU was 13th and La. Tech was 14th. Future C-USA defector ECU rounded out the slate at 15th.
Four players graduated last season: Jenna Litoborski, Shannon McClean, Bianca Rouse and Lily Vera. Redding has added five players in their place: libero/defensive specialists Morgan Barker and Jackie Servais, a transfer from Ole Miss; outside hitters Abreia Epps and Claire Kreuz (also a setter); and middle blocker Hayden Lucht. Back is the team leader in kills and blocks, senior Amanda Videmsek, as well as sophomore Carly Ochs, who enjoyed a solid freshman campaign.
Things get underway with the Green/White Scrimmage on August 24, the first look at the 2013 volleyball Niners. The first home tournament, the annual Hilton University 49er Invite, is September 20 and 21; C-USA play begins at FIU September 27 with the conference home opener against La. Tech on October 4.
