Niner NotePAD: Charlotte 49ers news and notes from the past week

Two weeks from the first event on the Charlotte 49ers’ 2013-14 athletic calendar (a women’s soccer exhibition match at UNC Asheville), we crack open the Niner NotePAD and catch up on what’s happening around Niner Nation–besides football, of course:

–The drumline has started practice in advance of the big day–August 31.  Auditions took place on July 28 and the group of twenty-five was put together shortly thereafter.  Jay Grymes is the director, with several instructors working hands-on to make sure everything is perfect when they take the field four weeks from today…

–Jenn Hailey will be playing professional ball overseas.  This past week, the former Charlotte women’s basketball star signed a deal with C.U.S. Caligiari of Serie A1, the highest level of women’s hoops in Italy.  Also on the team: former La. Tech standout Adrienne Johnson, who ended her college career as the WAC Player of the Year following the 2010-11 season.  The first game is in October against Parma…

–Speaking of former Niners overseas, Hailey’s news got us thinking about Carrie Dail, the former women’s soccer star.  We did find that she had seven goals at last check with her club in Sweden, Tierps IF, but we also found out that she took a trip to Pamplona, Spain–to participate in the annual running of the bulls.  Fortunately, she made it out alive…

–Finally, if you’re a UNC Charlotte student, the athletic department is looking for a new Norm.  It’s a paid position, and perks include being up close and personal to Charlotte 49ers events not only around campus, but around the community as well.  Students are asked to email [email protected] if they’re interested.
