Foundation Academy (FL) defensive back Denzel Irvin has verbally committed to the Charlotte 49ers, Rivals.com’s Tim Parker tweeted late Saturday night. Irvin marks the 13th verbal commit for the Niner football staff and is the first in the class from the Sunshine State thus far.
We profiled Irvin a couple of months ago, and the 5’10, 165 pound two-star recruit had spoken very highly of the Charlotte staff when speaking of coach Drew Dayton.
“He just told me he likes the way I play,” Irvin told the Orlando Sentinel back then, “and he said he wants to get me up there for a visit and wanted to offer me a scholarship to come there.”
Now it looks like he will be playing for Charlotte, the first FBS offer he received (FIU, FAU and Georgia had reportedly shown interest). Having verbaled, Irvin can focus solely on football and honing his craft before hitting campus next year.
Irvin recorded 82 tackles (54 solo) and a sack for Foundation Academy in 2012; he also picked up two interceptions and was also utilized as a receiver in head coach Brad Lord’s system. He’ll join free safety Des Cooper (Jacksonville) and LB duo Caleb Clayton-Molby (Panama City Beach) and Kendal Parker as the only Niners from the state of Florida.
