The Charlotte 49ers left Chattanooga with a 2-2 record this weekend, bringing their overall record to 3-4 on the season. The Niners started off the Country Inns and Suites Invitational with a tough loss to Tennessee-Martin in three straight sets by the closest margin possible (25-23, 25-23, 27-25). Then they had their first back-to-back wins of the season by beating tournament host Chattanooga in five sets (25-27, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-8) followed by a win against fellow North Carolina foe UNC Asheville in four sets (25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 27-25). Charlotte finished off the weekend with a loss to a very tough Tennessee squad in three sets (25-17, 25-12, 25-20).
Charlotte’s senior leader, Amanda Videmsek, led the team in kills over the weekend with 51, bringing her season total to a team-leading 87 kills. As a relatively young squad, the 49ers got good contributions from sophomores Michelle Hovey and Britney Leigh Held as well, who led the team in digs with 86 and 45, respectively. Held also led the team in assists in the tourney with 173. Newcomer Claire Kreuz continues to be a big contributor to the team with the second most kills on the team with 86.
The team looks to bring their record above .500 when the Niners pick back up play this Thursday at the Spartan Classic in Norfolk, Va against tournament host Norfolk State. After this weekend, the next tournament Charlotte plays will be hosted at Halton Arena next Friday against South Carolina State for the team’s season home opener.
