The Charlotte 49ers women’s volleyball team was finally able to put together an extremely solid performance this weekend, winning all three matches at the Spartan Invite in Norfolk, Virginia.
The team played so well that they didn’t lose a set all weekend by sweeping Norfolk State, Maryland-Eastern Shore, and Bethune-Cookman in each match. Although it wasn’t against the best competition, this has to be a good confidence booster for the young Niner squad. Charlotte has improved their win-loss record each weekend (1-2 at the Wildcat Classic, 2-2 at the Country Inns and Suites Invitational, and now 3-0 at the Spartan Invite), which comes at a good time as the team prepares for conference play which begins in less than two weeks.
The perfect weekend brings the team to a winning record of 6-4 as they prepare to play at North Carolina A&T Tuesday. The 49ers were once again led by senior captain Amanda Videmsek, who won the tournament’s MVP honors. Videmsek led the team in kills this weekend with 31, bringing her season total to a team-leading 118 (just under 12 kills/game). Fellow senior Taylor Cannon also had a solid weekend with 29 kills, good for second on the team. Sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held continues to play well by racking up 99 assists for the weekend. Sophomore libero Michelle Hovey remains the team leader in digs on the year by adding a team-best 36 digs over the weekend. Freshmen Claire Kreuz (98 kills), Morgan Barker (76 digs), and Jackie Servais (65 digs) all continue to be solid contributors to the squad this year and should keep improving as the season goes along.
After the team travels to NC A&T on Tuesday, the Niners will host the 49er Invite this weekend in Halton Arena for the first home matches of the season. The team’s season home opener against South Carolina State will be at 7 pm Friday night, followed by 12:30 and 7 pm matches against Tennessee State and Elon Saturday. If you aren’t traveling to Harrisonburg for the football game this weekend, make sure to come out to one of the matches this weekend and support the 49er Volleyball team!
