The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team came one win away from sweeping the 49er Invite at Halton Arena, but couldn’t hold onto a one-set lead against Elon en route to a 3-1 loss. That put an end to a six-match winning streak and a run of nineteen sets won in a row–one shy of a school record.
All wasn’t lost this past weekend by any stretch of the imagination as the Niners swept South Carolina State on Friday and Tennessee State on Saturday, their fifth and sixth consecutive straight-set victories before the loss to the Phoenix in the tournament’s championship match Saturday night. Sophomore Michelle Hovey ended the tourney with 52 digs, giving her a team-leading 245 on the year; classmate Britney Leigh Held was an assist shy of 100 for the weekend and was also good at the net (nine block assists–six against Tennessee State). Freshman Claire Kreuz racked up seven service aces in the three matches (including four against S.C. State)–but she struggled against Elon, committing four service errors. Amanda Videmsek took top honors in kills (34), including 11 against Tennessee State (falling a dig short of a double-double) and 13 against Elon, giving her 164 this year; Taylor Cannon enjoyed a 13-kill performance against Tennessee State, joining Videmsek in double digits in that one.
One final match stands between the Niners and conference play–a showdown against local rival Gardner-Webb on Tuesday at 7pm inside Halton Arena. Then it’s off to Florida to kick off C-USA action–FIU on Friday and FAU on Sunday.
