Happy Friday! Let’s crack open the Niner NotePAD and get you caught up on what’s happening around Niner Nation this weekend.
It doesn’t get easier for the Charlotte 49ers football team over the next four games.
–It all begins tomorrow as the Niners host Gardner-Webb at Jerry Richardson Stadium. The Bulldogs (4-1), of course, are ranked #24 in FCS and have picked up wins over two top twelve teams (#11 Wofford and #8 Richmond).
–After that, it’s homecoming as UNC Pembroke comes to town on October 12. The Braves currently sit at 4-0 and are ranked 13th in the latest Division II poll.
–Then, after the bye week, the Niners hit the road for back-to-back games in South Carolina. Charleston Southern (October 26) is up first and are receiving votes in both FCS polls after a 5-0 start.
–Then, on November 2, it’s off to Coastal Carolina, who is not only 5-0 but ranked in the top 10 in both polls (#6 coaches/#9 Sports Network). As it stands now, it will be the stiffest challenge this team will face.
Do the math and that’s four teams with an 18-1 combined record. Never mind the fact that Pembroke is D-II, by the way. They’ll be looking to come in and spoil the homecoming festivities. Depending on how the Niners do, we’ll likely learn a lot about them over these next few weeks.
–Besides football, another busy weekend is coming up in Niner Nation. Tonight, both women’s soccer (UTSA) and volleyball (La. Tech) open their home schedules; women’s soccer retires the jersey of Hailey Beam. The only other women’s soccer player to have her jersey retired? Hailey’s older sister, Lindsey Beam Ozimek. The home cooking continues on Sunday as WSoc takes on Middle Tennessee while volleyball entertains Tulane.
–Men’s soccer continues a tough stretch at New Mexico–game time for that is set for 9:00pm ET.
–Don’t forget cross country, who is at the Paul Short Run at Pennsylvania; golf, who is at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Alabama; and men’s tennis, who is up at Davidson for the Jim Causey Invitational.
