Conference USA Football Recap–Week 7

Conference play was once again in full-swing this week for the teams of Conference USA.

East Carolina looked to keep their BCS-busting hopes alive as they traveled to New Orleans to play Tulane. The Pirates once again racked up over 500 yards of total offense but costly miscues plagued them throughout the game. East Carolina kicker Warren Harvey missed three field goals on the day which included a game-winning attempt at the end of regulation, as well as an attempt in 3OT. Tulane kicker Cairo Santos connected on five of his six field goal attempts including the game-winner in 3OT. Tulane continues to be undefeated in league play as they defeated the Pirates 36-33.

The UTSA Roadrunners looked to defeat their second conference opponent on the season as in-state rival Rice came to town this weekend. The Owls took a commanding 27-7 lead into the 4th Quarter but had to withstand a furious rally by the Roadrunners to hold on to the win, 27-21. Rice also remains undefeated in league play.

Marshall was on upset alert this weekend as they traveled to Boca Raton to face Florida Atlantic and their stout defense. The Owls kept the Herd’s high-powered offense in-check for most of the game but Marshall QB Rakeem Cato and company scored the final 10 points of the game including a game-winning 41-yard field goal as time expired to win the game 24-23. Marshall now sits atop the East Division standings all by their lonesome with a 2-0 league record.

North Texas was looking to earn their first Conference USA victory as they played host to Middle Tennessee this weekend. The Mean Green completely dominated their former Sun Belt rival as they ran away with a surprising 34-7 victory. Highlights can be seen here: Middle Tennessee @ North Texas.

Defending Conference USA champions Tulsa looked to get their first league victory on the season as they traveled to the Sun Bowl to face UTEP. Golden Hurricane running back Trey Watts ran all over the Miner defense as he racked up 142 yards on the ground to lead Tulsa to the 34-20 victory.
