The Charlotte 49ers’ bye week couldn’t have come at a better time.  The Niners’ next two opponents–Charleston Southern on October 26 and Coastal Carolina on November 2, both road games–are ranked in one or both of the FCS top 25 polls.

Charleston Southern (7-0) shows as #24 in the coaches poll and received the second highest vote total among unranked teams in The Sports Network/Fathead.com rankings.  A 25-17 winner at VMI on Saturday, they will head out west this week to visit FBS and Pac-12 foe Colorado before hosting the Niners the next week.

Coastal Carolina, meanwhile, is ranked in both polls: #4 in the coaches poll and #6 by TSN.  They have a trip to Big South rival Liberty planned for Saturday before returning home against VMI on the 26th, then welcoming Charlotte for homecoming on November 2.  The Chants will be all but guaranteed a bye in the first round of the FCS playoffs if they run the table (not including their season-ending game at South Carolina on November 23).

One final tidbit: the Niners’ final home opponent, Wesley College (November 9), is ranked #11–but in the Division III polls (AFCA and D3Football.com).  But you can be assured that this team isn’t even focused on that right now.  The task at hand: weathering their toughest stretch of their inaugural season.
