Even after suffering injuries to some of their key players, the Charlotte 49ers kept their heads up. Now, they’re the best in the east.
Two second-half goals broke a 1-1 halftime deadlock and lifted the Niners to a 3-1 victory over Old Dominion in Norfolk, Virginia on Thursday night. With the win, Charlotte (10-6-2, 5-3-2 C-USA) clinched the Conference USA East Division title thanks to losses by the two teams ahead of them in the points standings. Marshall held on for a 1-0 win at FIU while FAU defeated UAB 2-0 on the road.
It didn’t take long for Charlotte to find the net as Perri Bonner made it 1-0 just 47 seconds in, the fifth-quickest goal in program history. But in the 8th minute, the Lady Monarchs’ Meghan Cozens tied it at 1-1, where it stayed until halftime despite seven shots by the Niners (four on goal).
In the 2nd half, though, the visitors went to work. Sara Trexler’s blast from outside the box got past Meredith Lenox to make it 2-1. Amanda Jones followed in the 59th minute with a forty-yard strike to get it to 3-1. That was all the Niners would need on this night, as Alex Kubrick and the defense did the rest.
