The Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls were hardly a challenge for the Charlotte 49ers.
Behind 55.4% shooting and 27 forced turnovers, the Niners powered past their overmatched Division II opponent, 98-46, in an exhibition game at Halton Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Charlotte raced to a 50-17 lead en route to an easy victory at home. Kira Gordon led the way in the opening frame with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Lefty Webster and Ayanna Holmes each netted seven. In the second half, the Niners outscored the Golden Bulls 48-29 as they were barely challenged, despite an 11-0 run midway through the period and a few baskets inside. But all in all, defense won the day for Charlotte as they coerced their crosstown foes into 27 miscues.
Gordon led all scorers with 15 points on 6-7 shooting and 3-4 from the stripe, while recording eight rebounds. Nine Niner players hit double figures, including Hillary Sigmon (13 points, 2-3 beyond the arc), freshmen Lefty Webster (12) and Ciara Gregory (11, 2-4 from three). Olivia Rankin had a nice day with a double-double (ten points and ten rebounds.)
The Niners get back to work on Friday as they welcome Liberty to Halton Arena for their season opener. Tipoff for that one is set for 5pm as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team (playing ETSU right after).
