Don’t tell Cara Consuegra and the Charlotte 49ers that it’s an exhibition game, because they’re not looking at it that way. Either way, it is the first time they’ll take the court this season against an opponent, and today, it’s cross town foe Johnson C. Smith from Division II. It will be the third year in a row that the Niners have hosted the Golden Bulls in an exhibition tilt.
We can’t really scout JCSU because, after all, it’s a preseason game, and the Golden Bulls are looking to test some things out and help the team get their feet wet against a much better, much more talented opponent. We do want to tip our cap to head coach Stephen Joyner Jr. for calling off the dogs last year when realizing that the Niners had a 49-point lead with time counting down.
Consider this a dry run for the rest of the season as we “Countdown to Tipoff” for the first time.
–Deanna Downer (8.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg) will pace a team that might struggle to find points this season.
–Head coach Stephen Joyner Jr. enters his 2nd season with the team. He led them to an 8-18 (5-11 CIAA) mark last year. Joyner’s father, Stephen Sr., is currently the men’s basketball coach at JCSU (formerly the women’s coach) as well as the school’s athletic director.
