The Puerto Rico Tip-Off begins with a first round matchup between the Charlotte 49ers and the Kansas State Wildcats at 10:30 am.
Both teams are off to a 2-1 start on the young season: the Niners topped ETSU at home and lost at the last second at College of Charleston before returning to Halton Arena and defeating Elon. Bruce Weber’s Wildcats, on the other hand, are looking for their third straight win since a disappointing loss to start the year at the hands of UNC (not that UNC, by the way; the other UNC, the University Northern Colorado) they’ve beaten Oral Roberts and Long Beach State.
What would a win mean for the 49ers at this stage? Well, the Wildcats are coming off a bad opening-season loss to a team that should have beaten in Northern Colorado, and they’re certainly a much different team than they were last season with guys like Rodney McGruder. But a Charlotte win could look a lot bigger on a potential (stress, potential) tournament resume if K-State ends up doing well down the stretch.
