From (Wild)cats to dogs (Huskies)…the Charlotte 49ers advance to the semifinal round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Their next opponent: the Huskies of Northeastern. (Read what the voice of the Huskies, Brandon Challener, had to say about the team by clicking here.)
The Huskies got into the semis with a 63-56 come from behind victory over the Georgetown Hoyas to move to 2-2 on the season. The Niners, meanwhile, did away with the Kansas State Wildcats, 68-61, to punch their ticket to round two.
Looking ahead for Charlotte, they’re guaranteed a game against either national runner-up and the 14th-ranked Michigan Wolverines or a much-improved Florida State Seminoles team on Sunday, who dumped Charlotte’s former A-10 conference mate, the 10th-ranked VCU Rams, 85-67 yesterday. It’s a real chance to get back into the nation’s consciousness, even more so than their Great Alaska Shootout championship last year, if they’re able to pull off the title in San Juan. (The Wolverines, by the way, were a 85-61 victor over the other 49ers yesterday–the 49ers of Long Beach State.)
Today’s game is on ESPNU at 2:30 pm (not ESPN 2 as has been reported in some places). Of course, if you’re a WatchESPN subscriber, that means you can click here to view the action live straight from your computer.
