The Charlotte 49ers picked up their fifth straight win, but were dealt a huge loss in the process.
A 77-56 victory over the visiting UNC Asheville Bulldogs was overshadowed by a knee injury to starting point guard Pierria Henry. The junior appeared to step on the foot of a UNCA player, then went down in pain and had to be carried off the court. There was no immediate update, but Henry will have his knee checked out tomorrow and obviously will not practice.
It was a black mark on a generally good night otherwise for the Niners, who led the Bulldogs (1-7) by only five with just under 16 minutes left in the 2nd half before taking control. Leading the charge was Shawn Lester, who scored 12 of his game-high 16 points in the final 20 minutes. Willie Clayton (12 points, 12 rebounds) registered a double-double while Mike Thorne (12 and 9) came close.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Jaron Lane (23 points, 9-18 from the floor, 5-7 at the stripe). Sam Hughes (14) and Andrew Rowsey (13) were double-digit scorers for the visitors; no other player had more than 3 as Charlotte (6-1) held UNCA to 34.5% shooting.
Davidson is next–Wednesday night at 7pm in Halton Arena. And, as we’ve said before, throw out the record books in this rivalry game.
WBB: Charlotte 80, UNLV 75
The Niners are leaving their road losing streak in Las Vegas.
Hillary Sigmon hit 22 points for the second straight night as Charlotte (4-4) picked up its first victory away from Halton in the consolation game of the Lady Rebel Round-Up against the tournament hosts.
Sigmon was just 2-9 from three, but countered that with 7-15 shooting overall and 6-7 shooting from the line. Alexis Alexander and Kira Gordon chipped in 14 a piece, while Kenya Olley (nine points, six rebounds) was solid off the bench.
Alana Cesarz led the Lady Rebels (2-5) with 17 points; Brianne Charles contributed 16.
Charlotte returns to Halton Arena as they face their toughest test of the season–the #13 Gamecocks of South Carolina–Sunday at 2pm.
