Three things you need to know as the Charlotte 49ers return to the court for the first time after Christmas break, hosting the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on national television (Fox Sports 1), Sunday at 7pm inside Halton Arena:
–Georgia Tech (8-4) hasn’t played since December 21, a 76-63 loss to Vanderbilt in Nashville. Daniel Miller led the Jackets with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a game where the Commodores battled back from a 14-point first half deficit.
–Four members of Tech’s regular starting lineup are averaging double figures in scoring, led by Tennessee transfer Trae Golden (12.3 ppg); along with Marcus Georges-Hunt, Daniel Miller and Robert Carter Jr., they are averaging 45.3 points combined. Carter is second among ACC players with 9.4 boards an outing, while Miller leads the team with 24 blocks (an average of two a game).
–Golden has had a tough ride to this point. A guard with the Volunteers last season, the senior elected to head to Georgia Tech to be with his ailing father and was granted a waiver by the NCAA to play immediately. It wasn’t without some controversy: there were rumors that the senior departed Knoxville in the midst of academic issues. Golden averaged 12.1 points a game with the Vols in 2012-13 and dished out 3.9 dimes, third among his SEC counterparts.
