Some news and notes from the Charlotte 49ers as we crack open the Niner NotePAD for the first time in a while:
–Tomorrow is the Education Day game for the Charlotte 49ers women’s basketball team as a host of third to eighth graders descend upon Halton to watch the Niners wrap up non-conference play against UNC Wilmington. The activities actually begin at 9am with various sessions from the Charlotte athletic department, right on up to the noon start time.
–The Niners have struggled a little of late, falling to Furman 76-75 on Sunday to drop to 5-7 overall. They’ve lost four of their last six games this season but have a 13-5 lead in the all-time series against the lowly Seahawks (1-12). In other words, it should be no contest against a team that’s dressed only seven players this year.
–With Giuseppe Gentile looking to enter professional soccer over the next few months, his hope was that he would be one of the MLS’ Generation Adidas signees that would enter the 2014 SuperDraft–but it wasn’t to be as he was not one of the four players signed today. The Niners have one player–outgoing senior Tyler Gibson–that will participate in the MLS combine beginning next Thursday, with the draft to be held two weeks from today.
–The Diamond Niners announced the signing of nine members from the high school class of 2015 today. Six are pitchers, while the other three are infielders (one is a two-way pitcher/infielder). The list and the writeup on the group can be found here.
